Historical awareness in the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine is undergoing a fundamental change. It is not only the national self-image that has to be reassessed since the independence of both countries. New civil society processes are also being initiated beyond this. There is a growing interest in rediscovering the multi-ethnic structures of the regions and understanding historical diversity as an enrichment for the present. Museums, especially minority, local history and regional museums, play a central role in this.
What is the current approach to intertwined histories, some of which have long been suppressed? What is their European dimension? City and local history museums increasingly see themselves as civil society actors that not only reflect social developments but can also have a strong impact on the most diverse sections of the population. In cooperation with associations, municipalities and think tanks, these “small houses” are developing new forms of presentation and communication strategies in order to document the diverse cultural memory of their region/hometown and make it possible to experience it in a new way. This process has enormous significance and political appeal, particularly in view of the current threat.
Participants in this exchange of experiences on the role and new spheres of action of museums (minority, regional and local collections) are curators from the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Germany, as well as academics, independent cultural mediators and representatives of associations.
